Oral Health Partners

Oral health is a core component of overall health; a healthy mouth and body are bidirectionally related. There is considerable evidence that diabetes increase[s] the risk for periodontitis (gum disease), and periodontal inflammation negatively affect[s] glycemic control. Clinical studies have shown that treatment for periodontal disease reduces hemoglobin A1C (HbA1C, or blood glucose) levels. In addition to its relationship with diabetes, periodontal disease has also been linked to cardiovascular disease (CVD). As our understanding of oral systemic interaction increases, the importance of integrating medicine and dentistry for care across the lifespan becomes increasingly clear. Medical dental integration (MDI) is essential to achieving overall health, including oral health. These MDI models are complex to design and implement; however, they have been shown to yield benefits such as improved interprofessional communications and better healthcare outcomes. UBC Dentistry faculty and students are committed to continuing work with the CHANGE BC teams to integrate oral health into care for individuals with metabolic syndrome.
