UBC Places Students in Primary Care

As part of the UBC School of Kinesiology’s new suite of Work Integrated Learning courses, the 3-9 credit Kinesiology in Primary Care course focuses on exercise prescription and programming in primary care practice, working with Canadian Health Advanced by Nutrition and Graded Exercise (CHANGE) BC through Pacific Northwest Division of Family Practice, and UBC’s Department of Family Practice. The experiential part of the course entails full-time practicum placement in an interprofessional primary care team within primary care networks that include family physicians, kinesiologists, practice support coaches and dieticians to implement exercise prescription and programming as a cornerstone of chronic disease prevention and health promotion. Students are supported by mentors and preceptors within primary care networks.

As part of the UBC Faculty of Dentistry, dental hygiene students enrolled in the 6-credit DHYG 406 directed studies course will explore the connections between oral health and metabolic syndrome, as well as the involvement of oral healthcare providers in the CHANGE BC initiative within the Pacific Northwest Division of Family Practice. The experiential aspect of the course involves a full-time practicum placement in PNW rural communities, where dental hygiene students will collaborate with CHANGE BC's interprofessional primary care teams and community groups.
